Every successful groom starts before the pet reaches the table. The client consultation is one of the most valuable tools a professional groomer has, yet it is often rushed or skipped during busy days. Spending a few extra minutes with every client can prevent misunderstandings, protect the pet, and build long-term trust.
Know the Pet Before You Groom
Ask questions about the pet’s health, medications, recent surgeries, allergies, mobility issues, and behavioral concerns. Even if you’ve groomed the dog before, circumstances can change between appointments.
Some important questions include:
• Has your pet been to the veterinarian recently?
• Have you noticed any new lumps, bumps, or skin issues?
• Has your pet become more anxious or sensitive during grooming?
• Is there anything different since the last visit?
Discuss Coat Condition Honestly
Matting is one of the biggest causes of unrealistic expectations. Instead of surprising the owner after the groom, explain the condition before you begin.
Show the client the affected areas and explain the safest grooming options. If shaving is necessary, explain why. Education helps clients understand that comfort and safety always come first.
Confirm the Style
Pictures are often better than descriptions.
A “puppy cut” can mean something completely different to two different people. Ask questions, clarify lengths, and use reference photos whenever possible.
Document Everything
Good notes protect everyone.
Record:
• Requested haircut
• Medical concerns
• Behavioral observations
• Existing skin conditions
• Owner approvals
These records become invaluable during future appointments.
The Bottom Line
The consultation is not lost time. It is an investment in safety, customer satisfaction, and professionalism. A five-minute conversation can prevent hours of frustration later.
